2020 ABWH Prizes

The Association of Black Women Historians (ABWH) is pleased to announce the 2020 Letitia Woods Brown prizes for the best book, anthology, and article in African American women’s history.  The Woods Brown prizes are awarded annually by ABWH.

2020 Letitia Woods Brown Book Prize for the best book or anthology in African American Women’s History

The competition is open to all books, anthologies, and articles concerning African American women’s history published between June 1, 2019, and May 30, 2020, including those written by members and non-members of ABWH. Winners will be notified no later than September 1, 2020.

To nominate a book or anthology, please email Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens at letitiawooodsbrownbookprize@gmail.com (please write ABWH BOOK PRIZE COMMITTEE in the subject line). To be considered for the award prize, each committee member must receive an electronic copy of the nominated book by the July 1, 2020 deadline (no exceptions).

2020 Letitia Woods Brown Article Prize for the best article in African American women’s history

The LetitiaWoods Brown Article prize is awarded annually by ABWH. The competition is open to all articles concerning African American women’s history published between June 1, 2019, and May 30, 2020, including those written by members and non-members of ABWH. Winners will be notified no later than September 1, 2020. 

To nominate an article, please email a PDF copy of the complete article with letter of nomination to Dr. Michelle Scott at letitiawoodsbrownarticleprize@gmail.com (please write ABWH ARTICLE PRIZE COMMITTEE in the subject line). Articles must be submitted by July 1, 2020 deadline (no exceptions). Winners will be notified no later than September 1, 2020.

2020 Lorraine A. Williams Leadership Award

The Lorraine A. Williams Leadership Award is a distinction that honors a Black woman in education or related areas, such as archives, libraries, historical societies, museums, etc.

Nomination Requirements 

  • Nominees must be outstanding scholars, administrators, or teachers who have demonstrated mentoring skills, not only in teaching or related work but in providing networks that enhance the professional growth of other black women scholars and students.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated organizational leadership in groups, organizations, or institutions that impact black women.
  • Nominees need not be a member of ABWH.
  • All nominations must be accompanied by a letter (or letters) that documents each of the above criteria. A biography or CV of the nominee should be included.
  • An individual may not nominate herself.

All nominations must be submitted to Dr. Crystal Sanders at lorraineawilliamsaward@gmail.com The deadline for receipt of all application materials (including letters of recommendation) is July 1, 2020. Winners will be notified no later than September 1, 2020.
